Irish islands as seen from Corraun: gems within reach or not?
Michiel Schwarz and Rody Luton explored the coast of Mayo. And took a photo from Baile an Ghleanna, Corraun from two exceptional islands in the Atlantic Ocean. On Clare Island (left) has a chapel adorned with an exceptionally early fresco and, close by, the family arms of the O’Malley clan in which their motto is chiseled: ‘terra marique potens’ (mighty land and sea).
On the right is the island Achill Beg with its early Christian and even older archaeological remains. Even closer to the ‘mainland’.
But beware! Although these gems lie within reach, you have to cross the ‘Little Sound’, one of Mayo’s most dangerous tidal currents.
