The Ferry Woman Peggy Lynchehaun
Fierce and fearless, a great-grandmother saved from oblivion.
By her great-grandson Fintan Masterson
She ferried doctors, cattle, priests, and the dead over from Tonregee to Claggan, Ballycroy. A short but treacherous journey across the waters of ‘Smuggler’s Bay’. Using oral history and written reports, Fintan brings back to life Peggy, his daring great-grandmother. This wonderful piece of family history about Margaret Lynchehaun, née McIntyre, was previously published in The Journal of the Westport Historical Society in 2014.
It recently reached the paper and consequently a wider public. And deservedly so.
Fintan Masterson works as a guide in the Ballycroy National Park, County Mayo. No doubt he has more local history in store for you!
